Los Angeles: Consuming cinnamon twice a day with meals can help two to four people at risk of diabetes to avoid the disease, according to a study.
Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles found that people in the pre-diabetic stage had significantly lower blood sugar levels if they consumed a teaspoon of cinnamon.
In the prediabetes stage, blood sugar levels are higher than healthy levels, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.
High blood sugar increases the risk of several potentially fatal complications
For the study, scientists selected more than 18 overweight or obese people who was in the pre-diabetes stage. These individuals were kept on a diet rich in simple carbohydrates and vegetables for one month
Half of the study participants were given placebo capsules two time a day, while the half were given a capsule containing a teaspoon of cinnamon.
The researchers found that people who ate the cinnamon capsules had significantly lower blood sugar levels and fewer spikes in glucose than those who ate a placebo.
